Building dog kennels is not as difficult as people might expect if they follow simple instructions on how to build dog kennels. Building a dog kennel to meet your needs can be far better than using a pre-fabricated model or makeshift kennel.
Dog owners may be tempted to make poor housing or unsafe temporary shelters for their dogs. Many times, this occurs out of the dog owners lack of education or mistakenly thinking the process of building a proper dog kennel is a complicated one.
Before building a homemade dog kennel, the dog owner should check for any local laws or regulations that set standards for outdoor dog kennels. In some municipalities, outdoor dog kennels may be banned completely.
The first step in how to build a dog kennel is to consider the necessary dimensions and desired materials. The size of the dog, the size of the dog house, and any local ordinances restricting the placement of the kennel in relation to the property lines should be considered.
As for materials, there are many options. Some dog owners use regular chain link fencing for the walls of the dog kennel. The height of the walls should ensure that the dog will be secure.
Secure walls are a necessity for the dog kennel. The dog owner can sink the posts for the fencing into concrete to stabilize the structure.
For the floors of the dog kennel, some dog owners use concrete, wood, or the ground. The ground should only be used if the dog owner is sure that the dog will not dig under the walls of the dog kennel.
The floor of the kennel can be designed to be a slight slope. Therefore, the dog owner can use a hose to spray the floor of the kennel to clean it.
The location of the dog kennel ideally provides the dog with areas of shade and areas of direct sunlight. If no sources of shade are located nearby, the dog owner may want to create an area of shade by having a partial roof on the kennel.
The door to the kennel should be properly secured. A metal latch should be used as opposed to tying the door shut with rope. Rope tends to be able to be stretched after being used for awhile, which could allow the dog to push the door open far enough to escape.
