The Schnauzer and the Poodle are popular breeds around the world and many are drawn to them because of their irresistible charm. Crossing these two purebreds, however, results to an even more adorable new kind of dog, the Schnoodle. The name of this hybrid, as a portmanteau of Schnauzer and Poodle obviously represents the two purebreds’ charms.
The Schnoodle is considered as a domestic dog, mostly adopted as a family pet more than anything else. This dog may be seen living in an apartment, a wide spaced home, and even a farm. It is not extremely active but not dormant as well and so a little space to play and move around with is sufficient for him.
The Poodle and the Schnauzer come in different sizes like for the Poodle: Standard, Miniature or Toy. For the Schnauzer, the sizes range from Giant, Standard, and Miniature. However, for developing of Schnoodles, breeders usually opt for a miniature size which goes between 7 to 26 pounds in weight.
Subsequently, not only in sizes the Schnoodles vary but in appearance as well. In terms of coat texture, some Schnoodles may inherit the Schnauzer’s rough and wiry hair. Some may also develop the Poodle’s soft coat but at times, a combination of the two differing coat textures may appear in one dog.
The Schnauzer has a distinct beard and so some Schnoodles may inherit this trait although it could be less dominant. In terms of coat colors, the range will go between the Schnauzer’s and the Poodle’s standard colors and usually these include black, brown, grey, white and apricot. Other color combinations are also common for the Schnoodles and these may include black and white, sable, parti and so much more.
The Schnauzer and Poodle are well-known to have less shedding coats and therefore, the possibility that the Schnoodle is hypoallergenic is extremely probable. In fact, many people today choose the Schnoodle for this hypoallergenic attribute. To keep this dog’s coat beautiful it has to have once a week coat brushing and every two to three months of grooming.
The Schnoodle is highly trainable, very intelligent and wise. It does not bark carelessly and therefore makes a pleasant family companion. This dog is not aggressive and in fact friendly with other animals and it does make a good watchdog.
This dog is loyal and affectionate to the family and it is generally good with children. It is also amiable and playful and it does great in obedience and agility. Additionally, the Schnoodle does not only make a good family pet but as a therapy and companion dog as well.
